Beautiful Boy
I can't believe its somewhat of a hot take to say this film is a masterpiece. It currently has an average rating of a 3.9 on a letterboxd which is very good but many of the reviews seemed kinda negative. Most agree that Timothée Chalmet and Steve Carol were magnificent and tear jerking in their respective roles but its the cinematography that is slightly controversial. Personally, Beautiful Boy produced some of the most gorgeous stills I've seen in film. I had no problem with the editing between flashbacks or perspective switches either. The one flashback to Nicks father singing Beautiful Boy to his innocent son juxtaposed with their current day drug ridden relationship was poignant but beautiful. I cannot get over how this film was nominated for zero oscars. Easily the best film I've seen to date that doesn't have any nominations. I mean come on, not even Best Adaptive Screenplay? And Timothée Chalamet was nominated for best supporting actor for ever award show under the sun besides the Oscars. The academy did this film dirty and its upsetting to see. I also want to express my love for Steve Carrol, he is so charming on screen whether its in a dramatic or comedic role. He reminds me of Robin Williams who is a fucking legend. Beautiful Boy serves as a great reminder that the drugs epidemic that America is facing can strike absolutely anybody. Nick was a man who grew up in a successful family, with a father who gave him all the love and support possible, and was a bright, personable man with so much potential. However, one hit of drugs lead him down a terrible chase filled with disaster and ruining the relationships of those who care for him most. This film has really stuck with me and I recommend it to everyone.
