Backrooms
I unfortunately saw the Letterboxd score before I wrote this review - 3.4, so I’m feeling some social pressure to downgrade my score against my true opinion, but I won’t. I absolutely loved Backrooms. I enjoyed everything about it from start to finish. It’s intriguing from the opening shot, and it never lags IMO, it just gets weirder and scarier, but it remains easy to follow the story. The cinematography, set design, editing, lighting, are all incredible. This film feels extremely disorienting but it also feels real. I noticed a Donnie Darko influence with the 1990s suburban dreamy surrealism. I can’t believe this director is 20 years old. The film is menacing and there’s a sense of dread that pervades and just gets deeper as the movie goes on. I need to see it again, but for now it’s 5 stars. Incredible. This is the liminal horror that I wanted from Skinamarink.
