Midnight Mass

Character 1: hey you want to get some ice cream?
Character 2: ha… do I want to get ice cream?… “want” to. That word. Want. That’s the whole problem. What do I want… You know that decrepit old mill where we used to make out? We were just teenagers. We were young. And stupid. And horny… And one time you got cut on a nail and contracted tetanus? You didn’t want that. But it happened. It happened even though you didn’t want it to happen because that’s how life happens. Life doesn’t care what you want. Hell, I was only fifteen I didn’t know what I wanted yet, but I had seen my friend contract tetanus… when that happens at fifteen, you don’t really bounce back… no. I haven’t known what I want for a long time. A really, fucking, long time.

but maybe that’s just it. Maybe that’s the whole truth I can never imagine accepting- that things are going to happen, whether I want them to or not- and I’m not going to have that control, whether I want to or not. That’s not for me to decide. I’ll only ever be able to decide what I want… never if what I want is what I get. That… that’s a power no one on this planet, in this universe made of random chance and freak luck, can ever hold. We’ll be here for a moment, and gone the next- our lives no more fleeting than a one night stand. And in the midst of it, we have the tenacity to wonder what we want out of it? I don’t know what I want. You don’t know what you want. Maybe the universe knows what it wants. But we’ll never to get to see that. At least not now.
