Ms. Marvel
“There is no normal. There is just us and what we do with what we’ve been given.”
Upon rewatch it’s become very apparent that a lot of the 2022 D+ shows have a lot of the same problems. A really interesting premise and characters overshadowed by the need for there to constantly be an end of the world plot.
Ms Marvel is no exception but it hurts a lot more here because the show has such a unique style and compelling cast of characters and dynamics that it sets up in its first few episodes only to be sidelined by yet another end of the world plotline. Even then, that plot is rushed and discarded by episode 5 so the show can go back to focusing on more personal and lower stakes which I’m really glad for.
This is probably the most fun and engaging cast of characters in these shows so far and I adore the editing in the first few episodes and last episode. Not to mention how refreshing it was to actually have secret identity drama in an MCU project during this period.
I still don’t know how to feel about the change to Kamala’s powers. It works for the story but it still feels like a bit of a weird change.
Overall, Ms Marvel does fall into the same pit falls that the other Disney+ shows fall into, but it’s just so fun and has such a likeable cast of characters it’s hard not to love. Also Iman Vellani is one of those pitch perfect comic book castings, she has so much charisma and brings that perfect fangirl energy needed for the character. I stand by the point that Kamala is one of the best new MCU characters and we need to see more of her. I hope we get that Young Avengers project sooner rather than later.
