Superman
#Supershit
Growing up I was never really a huge Superman fan, I liked him, I had the toys, the cape and watched the shows and movies but his character never really hit me. Unlike other superheroes like Spider-Man or Batman, who thrive on their imperfections, relatability and tragedies, I always thought Superman was too perfect and boring.
With this film I think I finally get it. No Superman is not a perfect god-like being like I used to think, he’s human, or more accurately what humans should thrive to be. He gets angry, scared, sad and he has flaws but he also cares and loves and does the right thing no matter what.
Lois Lane perfectly opposes Superman’s naive and optimistic view of the world and brings him back down to reality with her critical and logical view on his actions on the world, while Clark also helps Lois to see the world the way he does. All of their scenes together, especially the interview scene, really fleshes out these characters and shows why they’re perfect for each other.
Lex Luthor plays the perfect foil to this version of Superman, a farmboy just trying his best to do right in the world no matter how much it pushes against him, vs an egocentric and obsessed billionaire who will go to any method necessary to put down Superman, purely because he’s an alien. Lex’s pure hatred towards Superman is so masterfully conveyed and he makes such a detestable villain by the end of the film.
Like Superman, this film itself definitely has its flaws and it might be the recency bias talking but I still loved every second of it. This was the perfect (official) beginning of the new DCU and I’m so excited to see the rest of this world going forward.
*Also Mr Terrific was amazing, I need a movie or show about him now.*
And Krypto… Krypto too… I want one…
