Fallen Angels
The biggest prevalent theme in my opinion is one that is shared with a lot of films I enjoy. Which is that life happens to us and we have no real choice in our lives no real decisions made specifically with low-income urban adolescents. Like this quote, "The best thing about my profession is that there's no need to make any decision. Who's to die... when... where... it's all been planned by others". This quote is echoed in the introduction of the character to the end of his character. There is a small plot lacking significant transformations but in capturing realism like Linklater and Rohmer I feel as if meandering and minor internal conflicts affecting the character outward is necessary for the verisimilitude.
This theme is best showed through images as all great movies should. The 6mm super wide lens which gives us a sense of immersion into world of adolescent, low-income criminals and broken characters full of imperfections, just like we are a character having them interact around us. These imperfections and small character arcs had a 3 dimensional aspect I very rarely saw in other films these characters feel so alive and pop off the page. In addition to the colors with intentional seeping light contamination from the cities neon signs and broke fluorescents I mean so much is said about Won Kar-Wai’s stills they’re used in every pitch deck it would be derivative to go into depth.
And one of my favorite soundtracks because of the intention that I felt from the director moving the images with the music rather than pairing to the music.
