Marty Supreme
THIS MOVIE FUCKIN SLAPS! It lived up to and surpassed every expectation possible from the opening scene connecting to the opening credits it’s not here to leave the film resting in your mind it’s here to FUCK YOUR BRAIN.
It’s disgustingly tragic and perversely terrifying. Jean-Luc Godard said “if cinema still exists in the future it will be because of our feeling of truth” (paraphrased). We have all messed up in our life definitely not to the extent this man has at least I hope not but this character resonated with me as an audience and it leaves you empty and conscious of every decision you make moving forward. I mean the loss and the relationships broken the dignity he has given away OVER PING PONG I MEAN ITS PERFECT.
The screenplay was fantastic lots of stakes at play comical situations with witty and hilarious dialogue as well as just straight scenes of violence and malice with lots of complicity in the audience. I mean just think about the symbolic Masonic paddling to Marty it’s a seriously crude and fucked sense of humor but it’s witty and it makes sense in the study of the character for this lose of dignity.
Performance absolutely wonderful the face work the body language, Timothée Chalamet must have known every objective truth and tick for the scene to work he 100% deserves the Oscar for that performance.
This cinematography is so god damn good I mean I haven’t seen a modern film look this great in a while the subtle 35mm grain, the yellowing highlights green and brown undertones it’s the most beautiful cinematography I have seen in a modern film for a while. I love the intimacy and random movement of the camera it makes each situation more intense the further we engage with a scene also the way it tracks the eyes effortlessly and jagged. I think the shots also bring out the subconscious thoughts of him believing he is making the wrong decisions and he is an evil person despite his narcissism. Think of the shot after the telephone pole hits the gasoline on the floor, if he thought he was entirely in the right we would have shot it outside the car where it’s clear they are free from harm but instead it’s from the back of the car in a blurry window almost looking like zombies on fire, of course it plays into the character study but it shows he understands the extent of his actions and their consequences what it can do to others.
Fantastic verisimilitude feels just like 50s NY. The costume and makeup is genius to have a less high definition camera paired with makeup to make these people look flawed with acne scars and what not was genius you felt closer to the characters in a sense.
Oh and a nice score that fit and was intense not better than sinners or Superman by a long shot but still nice. The soundtrack was a gem too, having Everybody Wants To Rule The World as the ending credits is a haunting sick joke of a message. Achieving fame and power is for the weak, accepting yourself as a normal person takes bravery.
