Hamnet
Give Jessie Buckley that Oscar right now! Every single scene carried such raw emotion and I couldn’t stop crying in the second half.
I don’t think I’ve ever cried like that to another film, the story was compelling throughout, but the midway point absolutely broke me, I just cried for the whole second hour.
It was just such a pure and delicate story, every moment was so fragile and I wished this movie never ended. It filled me with such a comforting feeling in the final scene, Agnes finally got to let her grief out in the world in such a vulnerable way. She never could before as William wasn’t around.
I liked how the colour drained after Hamnet died, Hamnet left with the joy in their lives, leaving just dullness.
The soundtrack was gorgeous, it’s so moving, it heightened the emotions all the way through, especially in the final scene. My take on that scene is that, the final scene shows William’s grief coming through, as we don’t really see him grieve properly. He couldn’t save his son so he did the best thing he could, give his son immortality through art, letting the world be united through the grief of Hamnet. He also gave Hamnet his one wish, to be a sword fighter on stage.
All the acting was amazing, but oh my god Jessie Buckley was phenomenal, the scene where Hamnet died, you can see her break, I don’t know how to fully explain it, but Agnes losing herself in that movie, and only finds herself again at the end of the movie.
Hamnet also got his one other wish, he wanted to be brave and prove himself to his dad, and he was. ‘I’ll be brave,’ that line literally made me start sobbing, he just wanted to protect his sister, and he did.
I felt really bad for Agnes, as she couldn’t give her son up, even after it was already too late. I think that’s because she is a healer, she failed at what’s she meant to be good at. She couldn’t save her family. She couldn’t save her baby boy, and that’s got to be a very hard thing to go through. It was partially showcased at the end, as all she wants to do is help people, but in that process she ended up losing her son twice, all because she is a natural born healer.
10/10 movie would not recommend!
