Possession
An open wound of a movie that has no desire to compromise . Surreal , visceral , and unrelentingly heavy . I knew it was horror … but naming your kid Bob is beyond nightmarish . Inescapable brutal imagery , as a canvas for cycles of destruction . A confrontational and claustrophobic ( even suffocating ) camera that invades the viewers privacy and refuses to slip away . So so so well shot , the blocking and framing do a crazy amount of the heavy lifting . Love love love the symbolism from the Berlin Wall itself , to the liminal use of space representing both division and the longing for isolation . Absolutely drenched in dualities to cap it all off . The siren sounds that they foreshadowed are quite possibly my favorite part of the movie ( ifykyk ) . Surprisingly similar in many aspects to FWWM . An exhausting watch— certainly not something to watch often .
Knew I’d love it … and that it’d hit my favorites— but I imagine my buddy liked it even more than me . Which makes it even better .
Isabella Adjani ( I absolutely love her ) . Idk if she herself , knew she was even capable of this . Absolutely major . She was great in her smaller role in “ The Tenant ” but she was channeling a Naomi Watts and Sheryl Lee level performance… perhaps debatably even exceeding them . Certainly one of the best performances I’ve ever seen . Just a masterclass in physical acting and bold decisions … Sam Neill I did not know your game … I may have to watch “ In the Mouth of Madness “ soon after that ( I’ve just seen him in “ Jurassic Park “ ) . He was matching and elevating intensity in every scene . He should be discussed far more for this . I could write infinitely more— but it’ll end here for now …
Remarkable stuff , the ending … is a real ending— that’s how you end a movie .
