Resurrection

Pure Mastery . Hopefully cinema can be resurrected with Bi Gan ( his 3rd film ... ) A plea for surrendering to cinema ; enjoying it all in the moment , and letting it take its time .  You quite possibly can’t have your craft this refined at 35 . Everything is perfect . My expectations were the highest I’ve ever had before ; for a new anticipated release , and it surpassed beyond . It really is just a love letter to the medium— that transcends it . Undeniably a mystical score , already among the top of my favorites . Folks were right … it has inklings of Lynch and Wong Kar Wei mainly— but also Tarkovsky , Kurosawa , and Leos Carax … essentially a culmination of everything I like in unison . I wish I was joking when I say this but I have a concept that is strangely similar thematically , written down from December 17th that is literally the first 15-20 or so minutes of this movie and would continue in short chronicles the same way ( that idea deadass just spawned in my head , I’m not a writer ) . That completely blew my mind / enhanced my experience knowing fulfilled a strikingly similar vision that I had— which I will never be able to execute , and that made it easier to comprehend thematically as well . I see a few thematic overlaps with Holy Motors as well which was very surprising . The vampire symbolism is excellent , extending its arm out for the audience to walk with cinema through its immortality . The meta commentary on film— on film manipulation … about life as a whole … this was major . One of the best double features I’ve ever had . Will be revisited endless times . Criterion already preordered .
