‘Whats so bad about being with me?!’
**‘I’ve never been with you Bear.’
**
Such a gruesome movie.
At the heart of its core its a movie about bodily autonomy and how some people ignore that when rejected. Nikki makes it clear she doesn’t like Bear anymore than a friend, which hurts him. Of course it does. But when Bear decides to take away her free will by wishing that she loves him, he crosses a line. He consciously ignores what she wants, how she feels, in order to satisfy what he wants, which is to feel her love. Even when confronted later on in the movie by the real Nikki, he still chooses to continue on this path of egotistical romantic assault. The scene which demonstrates this horrible wrongdoing is when ‘Nikki’ and Bear are intimate together, and she has basically no facial expression and is just making sounds to make it look like they’re in love. I think the real Nikki was in control of her face, while the wished Nikki was making those sounds.
All this reflects real life. A rapist ignores what a woman wants and just takes what he wants, basically what Bear did.
When Bear wants to alter/cancel his wish, it is not because he wants Nikki to return. It is because she is acting strange, and he wants her to act normal and love him. Everything Bear does in this movie is about him.
The time Bear finally stops wanting her to love him, is when all things have already gone wrong and there are multiple victims. He tries to kill himself, and while that stops the curse layed upon Nikki, I feel like he still does it for himself. He can’t handle the guilt of his friends dying. He can’t handle anything, not even rejection. There is no acceptance to be found in his entire mind. When confronted, he chooses not to accept but to reject the reality and to change it.
Except for the plot and theming the acting is also very good. (Oscar material for sure) The movie is thrilling all the way through and has great shock moments.
Peak.
