Nosferatu
"Does evil come from within us, or from beyond?"
Robert Eggers, an absolutely horrific director whose name I can't recall until I saw his other films—particularly The Witch—reminded me of his stylistic approach in horror. Other horror movies inflict fear through scary scenes that will make you jump, which is very tired and predictable. He, however relies on the delivery of the tone in every scene, with inspired designed sets and costumes, bold and intimidating lighting, haunting musical pieces, and the rawness of the actors as he directed. I always love to see a creative who's evidently passionate about their interest!
I was very consumed by the amount of effort made to present Nosferatu as an immense and malevolent creature despite not showing his figure clearly nor as often. This leaves us with only a lasting eerie feeling, perfectly displaying his presence existing in the shadows. He is but a living corpse meant to be feared, not reimagined as a friendly foe. Yet again, Bill Skarsgård nailed a very ambitious and terrifying role.
And as my first experience of Lily-Rose Depp's acting, she did not disappoint. Her commitment to the role stirred me. She was amazing and I would love to see more of her in brave characters like Ellen Hutter. Well, we might see her again in Eggers' Werwulf, which I now look forward to.
