Listening to richter’s On the Nature of Daylight while writing this review so u know it’s a long one
Knew from the get go I’d have to watch this by myself and thank god I did cuz I did not have the energy to speak or socialize afterwards. I simply wanted silence and to just sit with this feeling for a bit, prolong it however long I could. It was lightly raining as I made my trek back to my apartment and honestly it was the perf gloomy day to just round it all out
This was marketed too heavily as a Paul Mescal movie (love him) and thank god he took it cuz idk if people would’ve watched it without his name to it as the certified sad hot white boy. But his performance was not the notable one, Jessie Buckley was so fucking incredible. I mean those screams, those facial expressions were working overtime. I need to check out more of her work
There was a great build up here, I was waiting for the urge for the cathartic cry and those last 10-20mins did not disappoint. Very seldom do films let you sit with the heaviness and ugliness of grief, but through Jessie and Paul’s characters, you not only see the pain and suffering grief can impart on you but also how it inspires you, drive you to create, makes you want to convey ur feelings in ways that touches others the same way. Watching the play scene and seeing Jessie watch Hamlet’s actor on stage all while seeing her son be immortalized in Shakespeare’s work forever was the dam that broke me. God, I love art, books, writing, music, plays, movies and any all works of art
