Superbad
For me, Superbad is the absolute pinnacle of American comedy. It’s absurd, it’s awkward, it’s hilarious, and it’s a perfect mix of relatable/raunchy comedy that defined the 2000’s.
One essential part that makes Superbad so great, and also what partly inspired a British show named The Inbetweeners, is the relatability of the comedy/scenarios the characters find themselves in. Every teenage boy has done something at least once to impress a girl, everyone has had a chaotic time at a party, and everyone has at least once tried to get alcohol chaotically. It’s also what makes the film so awkward; that scene where Evan tragically fails to have sex with Becca does present his trait of kindness, but it also hilariously shows how much of a virgin he is. The comedy could’ve been executed so poorly if not written by the right people, but what Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg managed to do is just golden. It’s raunchy, it pushes the boundaries, it’s creative, and some parts are just plain ridiculous, in an excellent way.
The character of Fogell is just so brilliant to me. He’s obviously set up as the ‘mega-nerd,’ constantly annoying everyone, and just hanging around like a nuisance. However, as he progresses, and as he socialises more with the cops, he gains confidence, to the point where, somehow, he gets the girl and creates the infamous, “It’s In!” scene.
The ending of Superbad isn’t an absolute blaze of glory as you’d expect it to be, but a quiet yet satisfying end to an absolute whirlwind of a film. The duo eventually get the girls they’ve been wanting for basically the whole film, and they don’t need to overly impress them, they just agree to it, and walk off with them, knowing that they’ve finally accomplished what they’ve tried so hard to do. Superbad takes you on a journey, through a night filled with chaos, girls, booze, and definite fun.
