Sinners
I’ve wanted to revisit it for a while now since my opinion was very different from most people’s, and wow, I was honestly completely wrong the first time.
I don’t really know what made me dislike it initially. I guess it was expectations mixed with a weird desire for something I liked to actually be bad. I don’t even know to be honest. But this second watch completely changed things for me. It felt like on my first watch I was looking for a plot I had already made up in my head, while this time I was actually looking for meaning behind it instead I suppose .
The whole store/market scene is really remarkable, truly nothing to complain about. It’s perfectly shot and very well acted. I really liked when Smoke shoots those two guys outside the store, it’s a great bit of comedic relief placed at exactly the right moment in a movie that could otherwise feel too tense without those breaks.
And wow, only 2–3 months of guitar playing to become that good is astounding.
The acting in this movie is some of the most consistently great acting I’ve seen in a single film. Michael B. Jordan does a remarkable job as the lead. Apparently he spent months figuring out how to play the twins differently, and the end result is truly astonishing. You can really tell which twin you’re watching even without color cues or names. I don’t really know why I’ve been hating on his performance for the past few months, because it’s honestly some of the best I’ve seen.
I’ve seen some people say Remmick was underused, but I don’t agree at all. Any more screen time and he would’ve lost his charm, tshey handled him perfectly.
I also really like the idea that the “Messengers” club Slim mentions is the same club Sammy plays at at the end of the movie. It would make a lot of sense. It’s called the Messengers because the music delivers messages from that night, and Slim says, “Messengers gon’ be there for ten years after that.” It just feels like a nice hint towards the viewer.
I really like how they explore the theme of sin and sinning. It’s been done many times before, but I’ve never seen it handled like this. Se7en should take notes, to be honest, God, that movie is overrated. I HATE IT.
The first 50–60 minutes of this film are incredible. Honestly, they might be some of the best Hollywood has ever offered in terms of pure quality. The buildup and introduction are done so meticulously and well.
And the amount of research that went into making this film is honestly insane.
Don’t even get me started on the cinematography, it’s beautifully shot, and the transitions that do appear are very well done.
The second half is a slight, and I truly mean slight drop. Of course it’s hard to compete with those first 40 minutes, and that unfortunately drags the film down just a teeny tiny bit.
Still, really great rewatch value, and I truly enjoyed my second time visiting this film.
My favorite scene has to be the beginning, when we see the guitar in the church. At that point, sin has already entered the most sacred thing those people know, their faith. I really like the faith vs desire theme throughout the movie, it truly feels unique and one of a kind.
I would have to rewatch it once or twice more to move it up in rankings but as of this review its my ninth favourite movie of all time.
Edit: who cares about a rewatch, i like it so its in my top four and if you don't like it why do you care honestly
Also, how didn’t “i lied to you” win best original song?!?
I usually keep track of my favorite lines, but I already had four written down after 8 minutes, so I stopped. Anyway, here they are:
“Figured we might as well deal with the devil we know.”
“You keep dancing with the devil, one day it’s gonna follow you home.”
“Where you got to be that’s more important than the house of God?”
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear, but when you’re tempted he will also provide a way so that you can endure.”
