Easily one of the most unsettling experiences I have ever sat through.
This film's use of sound and atmosphere is unlike any form of horror media I have ever experienced. It's not scary through jumpscares or anything it's a slow unnerving build up to philosophically grim imagery. I also just love this film's cinematography choices. We are aleays whatching our characters from afar WE are the observer and WE are the ghosts. The sound design alone is enough to terrifying me its use of eerie hums, static whispers and even the sudden silencing of scenes terrifies me.
Not only is this film terrifying in it's purest form it's also physiologically terrifying. This film is a slow an inescapable feeling that the world is getting smaller and lonelier and technology is only speeding up that very process. Kurosawa is a genius he doesn't only direct horror he freakin diagnoses it. I have GOT to watch Cure now for sure.
I knew I would love this movie. I have been trying to find a time and place to watch this movie for years now and all that waiting was worth it. I haven't watched a movie that made me rethink my Letterboxd top 4 in a while now and this is no question my favourite horror film of all time. I also love it's shared themes and similarities with two of my favourite anime, those being; Neon Genesis: Evangelion and Serial Experiments Lain.
