Doubt
"I have doubts. I have such doubts"
-Meryl Streep cries before the movie fades to black.
The year is 1964, and Donald Miller, an altar boy, is the first African-American to attend the Saint Nicholas Church School. He's not accepted and has no friends, but he has a protector, the progressive Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the only man who seems to care about him. One day during class Father Flynn calls Donald to the rectory to speak to him alone. When Donald returns to class he looks frightened and there's alcohol on his breath. There is no evidence of improper conduct towards Donald from Father Flynn. Still, the school principal, Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep) adamantly asserts that Father Flynn has an improper relationship with Donald.
The film explores moral themes of intolerance, prejudice, and Doubt. A screen adaptation of John Patrick Shanleys award-winning play featuring excellent performances from Streep, Hoffman, Adams, and Davis. "Doubt", shrouded in ambiguity, is a movie that will make you ask many questions and will provide few answers.
