BlackBerry
The second Elastica started playing I knew I'd really enjoy this film. I loved it! it reminded me so much of things like Succession and In the Loop, not in the way its shot but in its humour and structer too.
This movie is an awesome tribute to so much, obviously technology and human progression but also geek culture and as seems to be the case with lots of Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrols work, Canada!
The performances here are great, Glen Howerton's delivery is famously brilliant so I expected no less, but I was impressed with Jay Baruchel in a serious roll here too!
The camera work is so claustrophobic and vouyeristic at times that it does really feel like being a fly on the wall during the progression of Blackberry. I will say, some shots had me squinting a bit to see but I was watching on my didngy little telly in my room rather than a proper cinema screen.
If I had ooooone tinyyyyy eeensy weensy little gripe it would be that the needle drops, while I did freak out every time, got a little formulaic after a while. Cool quote, lingering shots, beloved song, make it diagetic. That being said I really dont even mind that much I was like stupidly excited every time. Matt Johnson has good taste 🤷♀️. The score by Jay McCarrol is absolutely gorgeous, and so perfectly fitting to each era and situation in the movie. Listening to the credits as I write this I'm just absolutely in awe.
This has me really excited to see Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie next month despite having never seen the show. Yay!!
