Shallow Grave
"No, no, that's what you paid for it. 500 pounds is what you paid for it. We don't know how much it cost us yet."
Seeing this, the film that made me realise that film making is what I want to do with my life on the big screen was inarticulatably fulfilling.
I love everything about this film. Every aspect feels so intentional and for lack of a better word, sturdy. None of the hour and a half feels watery or shoe horned in.
Every frame of this movie could be a painting. Not to mention the visual motifs in this film are wonderful. One that I enjoy very much is the spiral, the camera movements in the closing and opening shots, the stairs and the story itself. Another strong point of its visuals are its parallels between the start and the end of the film, the spining shots of David, the couch interviews, phenomenal.
The repeating motif in the music is brilliant as well, really drilling in the standard overture before distorting and reconfiguring it.
The characterisation of each protagonist through their actions is a really clever way to represent and personify hedonism and acetism, in Alex and David's characters respectively. It's one of my favourite aspects of the film.
It meant so much to me to be able to see this film in the cinema knowing now that I'm pursing a life of film making. During the final sequence especially I was so proud and so grateful to be genuinely chasing this life I want to see for myself. That's so gushy ew I'm so sorry.
