Freaks
"Gentlemen, I have not lied to you, you have seen with your own eyes the living monsters of our menagerie. You have laughed or felt disgusted, however if mocking nature had wanted it, you too could be like them. ..."*
**I believe that a film that can be too easily classified in a genre precludes itself from the start from the possibility of being a masterpiece.
e.g. 2001: A Space Odyssey is not a science fiction film, Life of Brian is not a comedy film, Eraserhead is not a horror film (this remains valid whatever one thinks about the quality of films).
And so Freaks: it has elements of horror and thriller (the wonderful scene that "prepares" the revenge), but does not exclude comedy, drama, satire, it also contains a love story etc. And it is "strange" above all in its apparent banality: no element in itself (photography, acting, dialogues) is masterfully realized or with particular originality, but put it all together and you have an extraordinary film, as well as absolutely unique.
With great respect for the "different" portraits and for the audience: it shows because it does not want to hide, therefore it reveals.
Just the opposite of so much horror cinema, which tickles the lowest and most morbid instincts. *
