“Highlander” is 80s though and through and definitely was an experience on the big screen.
I really liked enjoyed the opening 20-30 minutes and thought they were pretty amazing, but over the course of its runtime, the film becomes kind of a mixed bag. I think it lacks some structure and becomes a bit messy and jumpy. I wouldn’t say disjointed cause all the parts are there, but things just happen from scene to scene without a clear structural and storytelling through line. Maybe that’s partly due to the time jumps. And the film feels a tiny bit longer than it is.
But other than that, I enjoyed it a lot. Christopher Lambert delivering a performance with a lot grumpy looks and I’m still thinking about if he can actually act, Clancy Brown having a blast playing an over the top villain and the scottish Sean Connery playing some kind of spanish egyptian make for sole real fun characters.
The effects look good and are very charming, the locations cool and while medieval settings don’t do anything for me, the part in the scottish highlands was fine. The 4K restoration looks great and I really enjoyed cinematography and lighting, especially in the New York part. The New York parts really look absolutely fantastic. The score is amazing too and the Queen soundtrack absolutely phenomenal. Some really great songs. There also is some nice humor in here, although there are moments where I wasn’t too sure if the film wanted to be humorous or serious.
Over all, “Highlander” was pretty good. A fun time with a lot of 80s camp and some janky sword fights. Not sure if it’s a strong 3 stars or weak 3,5 stars. Might go with the 3,5 for now.
