MORDECAI AND RIGBY COULD BE GIVEN ONE JOB—ONE. SINGLE. JOB.—AND WITHIN FIVE MINUTES THEY'RE FIGHTING A DEMON, DESTROYING THE PARK, OR SOMEHOW CHALLENGING THE FABULOUS UNIVERSE TO A VIDEO-GAME BATTLE. 😭💀
That's Regular Show's entire brand and I wouldn't have it any other way. The genius is how aggressively mundane everything starts: a sandwich, a lawnmower, a video game, a party, a chair. Then the writers just keep adding bullshit until we're somehow dealing with cosmic entities. And underneath that chaos, the characters actually grow—especially Mordecai, Rigby, Benson, and Pops.
There are definitely stretches where the Mordecai-and-Rigby Fucking Everything Up™ formula starts showing its seams, and the romance drama can occasionally make you want to throw a chair through the television. But the show's bizarre mix of 1980s nostalgia, absurd fantasy, workplace comedy, and surprisingly sincere character writing is ridiculously distinctive. It started with two idiots slacking at a park and ended with the fate of existence on the line. Regular? Absolutely fucking not.
