> *" I wonder what future he'll have. "*
this series is kind of a strange middle ground between a sequel and a stand-alone story.
you don’t need to have seen Ring: Final Chapter to follow it , though it does reference the cursed tape and brings back Mai Takano and Sadako Yamamura , which is nice for fans.
the story immediately throws you into a bizarre scenario: an entire office building’s employees die of heart attacks at once , except for one former student , Misaki , who has no memory of what happened and suddenly becomes the prime suspect.
her sister Kumiko and their old teacher , Mitsuo Ando , step in to help , along with Natsumi Aihara from the Scientific Police and a young coroner , Kyosuke Oda , who seems to have a crush on her.
the series takes some liberties compared to the novel.
Ando is now a high school teacher rather than a coroner , and his wife Miwako is in a mental facility after their son’s death , still convinced he’s alive.
meanwhile , there’s a subplot with Toru Kawai , a fortune teller type who becomes a minor TV celebrity predicting the return of a mysterious King of Terror , which at first seems disconnected, but everything ties together neatly by the final episode.
the cursed video evolves here into a digital form on a CD-ROM , which explains the sudden deaths at the office.
Misaki survives because she becomes impregnated by the curse, leading to Sadako’s rebirth , though in a chaotic and sometimes hard to follow way.
the story gets intense and creepy , with a good mix of suspense and some genuinely unsettling moments.
I liked the characters and was invested enough to keep watching , even if some of the acting and dialogue is over the top in typical TV drama style.
my main problem was the ending.
there’s an interesting moment of sympathy toward Sadako , showing her as tragic rather than purely evil , which I appreciated.
but her final suicide by jumping off a building felt completely unbelievable and kind of cheapened her story.
Ando’s sacrifice at the end also felt unnecessary; after everything he did to destroy the curse and almost “earn” a reward for his selflessness , his death made his character arc feel wasted.
I also missed seeing Myashita , Ando’s sidekick from the novels , who was charming and added some human warmth to the story.
and while there’s a small reference to a virus that accelerates cellular growth , the “Ring virus” concept is basically absent here , which makes some of the final stakes feel less dramatic.
on the positive side , the series was clever in showing the evolution of the cursed video into digital form , which foreshadows ideas Suzuki would later revisit in S.
despite its flaws , the series was entertaining , suspenseful , and had enough weird , creepy elements to keep me interested , even if the ending left me a little frustrated.
