The funniest thing about The Patrick Star Show is that its premise basically gives the writers permission to do whatever the fuck they want—and sometimes that freedom actually pays off.
Making Patrick's show originate from his bedroom lets the series treat each episode like a miniature variety program, with his family functioning as both cast and unwilling production crew. Squidina as producer is particularly useful because she gives the chaos an actual internal mechanism: somebody has to keep this idiotic broadcast moving while Patrick wanders around inventing problems.
But compared with SpongeBob, the surrealism can feel less precise. The original series could take one stupid premise and escalate it until the joke became almost architectural; here, some segments simply pile nonsense on nonsense until the screenplay looks like it fell down the stairs holding a bag of cocaine and 47 storyboards. The family-focused setup is a nice expansion of Patrick's world, and the cast clearly understands the bizarre rhythm, but the show's hit rate isn't consistent enough to make all that freedom feel purposeful. It's not unwatchable. It's Patrick operating a television station with absolutely no adult supervision, which is both the premise and occasionally the fucking problem. 🫧📺💀
