I had watched JSA in between episodes of this series. While PCW is well known for his depictions of vulnerable yet cruel human nature, I feel like a lot is to be said about his ability to craft stories around brotherhood and connection.
Whether its friendship born from hate and misunderstanding depicted in JSA, or a friendship that doesn't know it's strained and weakened over time like The Sympathizer, he can really show the wide gap in how we all come to terms with each other. The complexities that we have, not only in ourselves, but the strings attaching us to our friends, rivals, enemies and the world at large.
That's what the Sympathizer highlighted to me, the nature of relationships. The Captain struggles with his relationship with himself, possessing a dual nature in every aspect of himself.
He struggles with the relationship with his childhood friends, one being a loyal friend but on the enemy side, the other one who is willing to sacrifice him but treats him as a comrade.
And any character played by RDJ is a strained relationship, which I was happy with how that played out.
Fantastic watch.
