Frankenstein
isn’t forgiveness the most powerful thing?
so many lines stuck out to me but most specifically the line the creature says: “i am obscene to you, but to myself I simply am”
this is one of the core themes of body horror that i favor the most. the horror of living in a body. in this case, a body that was neither yours or even one other persons. learning to live with it, to love it. or perhaps being loved in it despite the way many others deem it grotesque and blasphemous.
the creature is innocent and pure. so forgiving and kind despite the hardening the world tried to attempt and the violence committed against him and the violence he committed himself. this is what makes him different from man. his heart.
the look of the creature astounded me. not just the creation scene, his assembly, but the design and makeup. admittedly, this is my first introduction to frankenstein as a story in its entirety. of course i am familiar in the way most people are, especially people who surround themselves with horror stories and gothic literature, but this is the first time i sat down to really think of what it was. the creatures parts are taken from fallen men on the battlefield. this explaining why his skin is all patchwork, and “frankensteined” together made him more tragic somehow. when he realizes who he is, what he is, and mentions dreams of many men and pieces, it makes you wonder if the parts used to create him held parts of the soul after all. the pain the soul can carry.
i hadn’t considered the idea of victor constructing the entire body from scratch either. the tendons and bone and ligaments. what a beautiful artistic choice as opposed to taking an arm and a leg and stitching them to a torso. he is beautiful. long brown hair and patchwork skin with obvious scars. just gorgeous.
i also cannot believe it was jacob elordi under there. he has a way of rounding out his eyes and moving in such a fantastical wondrous way that i couldn’t see him as anything but a creature new to love and life. he moved with grace and innocence for someone so tall and built. i doubted him at first but i honestly cannot see anyone else playing this role, not just because of his gargantuan height but because of the look in his eyes.
this was so beautiful and fantastic and imaginative and colorful. i enjoyed myself greatly and finished watching with a sparkle in my eye.
