Halloween
2023 October Horror Movie Watch
(Television Cut from 4k Collectors Edition)
Halloween (1978) is my favorite movie of all time! It’s such a classic and there’s literally no flaws at all!
For a cheap $325,000, Halloween is so simple, yet so effective. The lack of gore really adds more to the eerie atmosphere of the film. It really just showcases how great of a writer and director John Carpenter is. Also with big help from Debra Hill, making the dialogue more real.
Although the movie was filmed in Pasadena, California, I still can pick up the autumn, Halloween vibe and that’s really what I want to see in these movies. And that vibe is also shown in other films in this franchise that I would rank higher than others because of the fall atmosphere.
Halloween is also my favorite movie soundtrack of all time! John Carpenter creates an absolutely iconic piece of music on a simple, yet again effective 5/4 time signature. Never has there been another film where anyone, no matter who they are can hear a soundtrack and immediately know exactly what movie it is from. And the ‘Halloween Theme’ is not the only great piece of music from the film. ‘Laurie’s Theme’ for me is my favorite song from the soundtrack. It’s eerie, yet it really puts you into that fall atmosphere and I love it! And don’t forget the panic inducing ‘The Shape Stalks’. Again, just so simple but so iconic and it really gets you engaged every time you hear it.
John Carpenter’s Halloween will forever be my favorite movie of all time. It’s so iconic, always a must watch during spooky season, the soundtrack is one of the greatest of all time, and it really set the foundation for horror films in not only that time period, but still today.
Lastly, never forget the legendary performance of Donald Pleasance as Dr. Loomis. And this beautifully written and acted monologue:
“I met him, 15 years ago; I was told there was nothing left; no reason, no conscience, no understanding in even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, of good or evil, right or wrong. I met this... six-year-old child with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and... the blackest eyes - the Devil's eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up, because I realized that what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... evil.”
Soundtrack: 10/10
