Frankenstein
"An idea, a feeling became clear to me. The hunter did not hate the wolf. The wolf did not hate the sheep. But violence felt inevitable between them. Perhaps, I thought, this was the way of the world. It would hunt you and kill you just for being who you are."
So earlier this year, I had the pleasure of studying Frankenstein for my drama assessment and I was even lucky enough to attend a live stage adaptation of the story.
I loved Mary Shelley's story so when I heard that THE Guillermo Del Toro was going to make his own film adaptation, I knew that I was going to be seated the moment it came to Netflix- and so I was.
The visuals are a sight to behold, production design does not get much better than this. From the practical sets, to the effects, to the makeup to the costumes.. it is all so incredibly gorgeous. The acting too is just about as dramatic as I can imagine this story. Jacob Elordi is the clear standout here, I truly hope he wins best supporting actor for this.
That being said, the real magic of this film stems from Guillermo Del Toro's subversion of Mary Shelly's original story. His reframing of how Frankenstein's creation is depicted makes for a story that feels personal to his style. One that touched my heart in a way that I cannot fully comprehend.
Anyway, you bet ill be adding this to the four favs. It's my personal pick for best picture this year. In my eyes this is Guillermo Del Toro's masterpiece.
