Soul
I remember earlier this year; around january... I had a really abysmal day and wanted to cheer myself up knowing that I struggle to sleep if my day doesn't go all that well.
For some reason something in my head was telling me to go rewatch this movie for the first time in years. I was unsure of why, but went along with it anyway expecting it to cheer me up but nothing more... what i did not expect was to fall in love with this movie the way I did. I have seen Soul so many times this year and I just seem to love it more and more every time...
Don't get me wrong, I always saw this as a fantastic movie; like top 10 Pixar... but i never would've imagined that it would eventually end up as one of my all time favourites and as of now, my favourite Pixar movie.
Soul really hit for me in recent times because of how it manages to take all of these complex things about life, simply them and manage to tell such an artful and powerful message for families. (Alongside also having an immense score, being gorgeously animated etc)
I think the big reason behind why this movie didn't go down as one of my favourites on my first viewing is because the main message didn't speak to me all that much at the time. This movie managed to really hit me in the gut on my more recent viewings is because of the recent internal conflicts that I have been undergoing, similar to what Joe goes through. In the past year or so, I've been debating my purpose in life, what my passions really are and how they'll reflect what I want to do as a job and other important stuff.
Seeing Joe follow what he thinks is his purpose in his life, only to find out that it wasn't what it shaped out to be and that he still wasn't content with his life after achieving what he thought was purpose is just so darn powerful for me. Even the conflict that 22 undergoes with her purpose is just so perfectly done and contrast super well with Joe.
The ending is just does it for me too, Joe gets another chance to live because his purpose in life still isn't fulfilled after the gig that he thought would fulfil his life. Just like, him we don't know what the future holds for us and how we'll live our life... but what we do know, is that we should be living every minute of it.
I really want to go into more depth on why I love this movie so much but I think better hold off all my thoughts for my upcoming Pixar ranking video that I'm working on.
"A spark isn't a souls purpose, oh you mentors and your passions. Your meanings in life! So Basic..."
P.S. I learned how to play the epiphany scene on piano :)
