Yi Yi
This is my all time favorite movie. I have watched it countless times and will never get tired of it; however I haven't seen it in a while now, mostly because of school and work. It might seem a bit cheesy for me to say, but I really missed it. It is the perfect comfort film for me. For me, the experience of watching Yi Yi is like Edward Yang giving you a hug and telling you "don't worry, everything will be ok"
This movie is beautiful and makes me believe that life is beautiful. It's hard not to relate to almost every character on this film. Yang Yang's (easily the highlight of the film) seemingly inability to communicate his own feelings. He uses photography as a way to explore the world with a sense of childlike wonder and curiosity. Ting Ting's inability to forgive herself for the mistakes that she has made. NJ's frustration towards the corporate greed he sees everywhere around him. Looking back on his life and decisions he made, he wonders if things might have turned out differently. Each character's and their struggles feel so real and relatable
There is one particular scene in the film that seemed to resonate with me more on this watch than previous times. It's a simple, but beautiful scene where Ting Ting plays Gershwin's "Summer Time" on the piano for her grandma. It's simply beautiful.
