“Kiss me my girl before I am sick.”*
Phantom Thread is enchantingly beautiful with touches of tenderness. It’s hand crafted with a beautiful score and amazing cinematography and use of colour.
It’s a contrast of two passions, a battle for attention from the eyes of an obsessive craftsman. Disorder comes in the form of a lover for someone as meticulous as Reynolds, as devoted to his trade. He can’t help but be a romantic even while tethered to his work.
We see fluxes of emotion, through moments of anger and disscontempt shine through the sweet displays of romance, moments with a soft and tender touch to them. The relationship is driven through ups and downs, and a sacrifice is made. A seemingly toxic cycle, but a willing one from both sides, and perhaps a necessary one. To cut through an obsession to his work, and open up love, and the care he truly desires. To flip the power dynamic, and make the controller, the controlled, but to his benefit and liking. His way of feeling loved.
It’s a gorgeous romance that flips the typical tropes on its head, but PTA, Day Lewis and Vicky Krieps manage to bring a soft, tender, but emotional and grounded touch to it.
