Phantom Thread

Phantom thread is a fascinating film that really captured my interest the entire way through.
Goddamn the character work and writing is so interesting. I wouldn’t dare spoil it for anything but I love how it portrays and plays with the romance as a genre. It’s like so real and grounded in emotion and at the same time completely absurd! I absolutely adore it goddamn like it’s so unique! I think it mostly works bc woodcock and Alma are such incredible leads for this idea(?). They’re both just so fleshed out and interesting like ughhhh like they had my brain moving in different circuits than anything I’ve ever seen yk. It’s really really really good!
Paul Thomas Anderson does another incredible job directing. Really well paced I was engaged the whole time. He totally nails the elegant style and 1950s France and tone to the t like it’s so well done.
The cinematography and lighting are absolutely stunning as well. It’s not grand or flashy in any way but still remains visually stunning but in an intimate and unique way yk. The colors are wonderful here I love how just colorful this one is!
Oh my god the score. It’s beautiful, I was genuinely blown away. Jonny fucking greenwood acc does something normal for once and it’s just perfect. So grand yet tender and compelling. I love the single piano it’s so elegant and intimate, mix that with the rest of the orchestra near the end and it’s just beautiful like it made a lot of those already beautiful scenes just more beautiful.
Daniel day Lewis is insane but like duh! Honestly I could barely even recognize him after there will be blood yk. But he nails woodcocks quiet and meticulous nature really well. Vicky keeps is pretty good as well I fw her. I mean even attempting to keep up w Daniel day Lewis in anything is a challenge for sure like I get that but like she’s just pretty good imo where I wanted an insane performance yk. Just bc I think Alma is so good and I wanted to see her brought to life with more authenticity yk. She isn’t bad or anything just wanted more from her.
Fuck this move is so beautiful and unique I love it.
