Yi Yi
“i can only see what’s in front, not what’s behind. so i can only know half of the truth, right?”
a slow yet beautiful masterpiece, Yi Yi asks you to spend time in its locations and sit with its shots, living alongside its people to fully understand the power of the story. it is about life and it is also about death. the pacing is impeccable, with some of the most purposeful editing and cinematography i have ever seen. the slowness reflects how life can feel drawn out in the moment, yet before you realize it, you have grown old. Yi Yi reminds us how important it is to be present in each moment, as so much of life passes us by when we are not paying attention. it also makes clear that life has no single path and offers no easy answers. sometimes, accepting life in its messy entirety is the only way to see a little more clearly.
