Ran
Ran is not just one of Akira Kurosawa’s best films.
It’s one of the most impressive movies ever made. By the time he made Ran, Kurosawa was already one of the greatest directors ever, with a huge reputation in cinema. But this film wasn’t easy. He spent years planning it while dealing with a lot of stress and worsening eyesight, which makes how huge and detailed the film is even more incredible. Even with all that, his creativity and passion never slowed.
The film looks absolutely amazing. The costumes are beautiful and full of color, helping every character stand out while making the movie feel grand and unique. The set designs are just as incredible, with massive castles, open landscapes, and battle scenes that feel both beautiful and tragic. Almost every shot feels carefully planned, like a painting brought to life.
Kurosawa’s direction is masterful. He knows exactly how to make every scene feel big, emotional, or quiet when it needs to be. The cinematography is stunning, filled with wide shots and beautiful visuals that make Ran one of the best-looking films ever made. The score by Toru Takemitsu also deserves praise, adding sadness, tension, and emotion to the story without ever feeling too much.
The acting is amazing across the board, but Tatsuya Nakadai as Hidetora gives one of the greatest performances ever put on screen. He completely becomes a man falling apart from guilt, pride, regret, and madness. The way Nakadai shows pain, fear, and heartbreak feels theatrical and powerful, making Hidetora unforgettable.
Ran is cinema at its absolute peak. Since it’s beautiful, emotional, and made with unbelievable care and skill. The fact that Kurosawa created something this incredible while struggling with his eyesight only makes it more impressive. Without a doubt, Ran is one of the greatest films of all time.
