The inspiration behind Sammie Moore was a guy named Robert Johnson. Arguably the founder of blues and subsequently all modern rock music. Legend says he could play the guitar so well it sounded like multiple people at the same time, he could flawlessly play any song after just one listen, and he learned how to play the guitar masterfully seemingly overnight. Legend also goes that he thus, must’ve sold his soul to the devil. While the imagery of this man standing at the crossroads, making a deal with a mysterious “devil” in return for musical talent and insight decades ahead of his time is cool. It’s also incredibly degrading and racist to one of the most influential and talented musicians of a generation. Sinners takes this story and flips it on its head. It’s not him getting his talent from the devil. The devil came to him for his incredible talent. He played the guitar so fucking well that the devil himself got summoned to take it away from him. And aside from that - it’s just a banger fucking movie.
