the most 80s 1995 sci-fi that brought you an actually interesting Brad Pitt character and sick philly sets! Not sure what happened with the direction/casting there but all I wanted was to go back to crazy Brad and ignore save-the-world-boring-stone-faced Bruce Willis. Bring back wacky Brad!

maybe this is coming out of my social policy professor brain but I love how these movies will just keep discussing themes of coexistence, diversity, and (I guess) urban planning. is it different enough from the first though? well, it’s different in that this one’s about gentrification/colonization and greed, but we again end up with a “diversity is important!” speech. in parallel, the judy-nick relationship dimension sometimes feels forced. maybe I’m complaining too much, I really did love the movie references, the puns were cool, and they made the lizards hilariously weird and the lynxes deeply villainous. animators playing pristine attention to the random NPCs in the background and giving them personalities and memorable moments will *always* get me. also are they…not…into each other…?

the future is so gay, you guys!!! but in all seriousness, this is the type of movie that reminds me of why I love science fiction so deeply. the future is terrifying and this genre allows us to explore both the fears and hopes of contemporary society. if we’re gonna have robots, why not humanize them? if we’re gonna have climate change, why wouldn’t humans just build physical bubbles around our homes and pretend it’s not happening? and if we’re gonna be able to time travel, why wouldn’t little adventurous boys jump on the chance to see dinosaurs when they’re not allowed? sure, the execution wasn’t perfect (was I the only one deeply disturbed by the baby?) but this has the bones to be the type of movie that little kids will grow up with and love — and maybe even make them think a little bit about how dire the future might be unless we…well, pivot. and I don’t know about you, but this is definitely the movie that I’d want to have that societal footprint rather than k-pop demon hunters.

mesmerizing. I love children, I love colors, and I love poetic scripts. cried maybe 10 times then added amelie to a baby name list. so many feelings.
