Detachment
I first watched this show back in 2020. Way before I started to log any movies or series I watched back then. With the way things were in 2020, I understood why a show like this would appeal to someone like 16 year old me. Detachment. A state of separation between persons or groups.
The setting of this movie involves a school in a poor/not so well-off district. Teachers doing their best to help these student and whatever problems they have but they too have grown tired and is mostly tolerating what the students pull. Such examples are students ignoring their teachers and the such. The problems lies with the parents as not many turned up on parents night. Parents who are pushing their problem child to these teacher and hoping they teachers could fix them.
Henry Barthe’s childhood, he saw his mother overdosed and died nude in their bathroom. It was implied that his grandfather got drunk and beat Patricia, his daughter and Henry’s Mother because Henry was advised to lock his door every night. He was not angry at his grandpa, he seems to have forgiven his grandpa and didn’t want his grandpa to die with regrets knowing he was the cause of Patricia’s death.
One thing about Henry as a character and his motto is. Children should not have to experience tragedies as they grow up. Though his character is not upbeat and upfront caring, Henry cares about these kids and students. He does his best to help them out in whatever way shape or form. Take Erica and Meredith. Erica was a teen prostitute sucking people of whoever were willing to give her money so she could survive. She followed Henry because he looks like someone who has money but he took care of her. Gave her food and shelter as well as happy memories symbolized by the ring she bought for him. Meanwhile Meredith felt truly seen by Henry and may have infatuation towards him. When she didn’t get the answer she wanted from Henry and the other teacher came in, it felt like it didn’t went out the way she hoped for.
