The WitchM9.9· October 21, 2023Followhooptober X - film 11 this film is so crushing. the feeling of doom from the first shot, solidified by our first encounter with the witch. this is possibly the most shocking and disturbing part of the film, it’s so impressive to have this happen so quickly and yet not take away from how effectively Eggers continues building tension until the very last shot. the constant and ever-growing fear of the inevitable demise of this family is so intense that you’re almost desperate to have something break it, even if it’s frightening, but Eggers exercises restraint, making the violent damnation of all those surrounding thomasin later in the film all the more shocking, despite excellent foreshadowing. i love this film as a commentary of girlhood and womanhood, not only of the period it’s set but as it still relates to our ideas, values, and prejudices we still hold against women today. as thomasin pleads with her father, “will thou not hear me?”, i felt the feeling of shock and helplessness when you realise that somebody you love and trust as much as your own father could not take you at your word, or could have any question of knowing you as you know him. and again when thomasins mother turns on her, accusing her of sin and of stealing away the men of her life knowing that it is truly her husband who has been false. “you reek of evil”, as she beats her daughter all thomasin can do is plead “i love you, i love you, i love you”, the kind of heartache you feel watching this is one i think can only be fully understood by daughters and mothers, Anya Taylor-Joy and Kate Dickie give incredible performances. i will guide thy hand and i would have gone too.CommentsSign in to react and join the conversation.Sign inGet the appSee all M's reviews for The Witch (2)First watch9.9October 21, 2023Rewatch 19.9January 9, 2025
