The Craft
Whatever you send out there, you get back times three.
“The Craft” follows four troubled teenage girls as they wreak vengeance on the world and people that hurt them through the use of newfound magical powers.
Sarah, the film’s main protagonist, befriends three school misfits after moving to a new city and transferring to a Catholic school. They ask her to join their witch coven as the fourth member, a necessity for certain spells. All seems to be going well at first, the girls are using their newfound abilities to have fun, but eventually, things take a disastrous turn when they begin casting spells for personal gain and cursing those who mistreated them. Sarah realizes that they have taken advantage of their gifts and that the power is changing her friends for the worse, but the other witches are clouded by their fantastical skills and can’t understand her point of view.
I love this movie and I understand that the conflict was necessary for creating a cohesive plotline, however, if I could remake the film, it would simply be an hour and a half of the main characters bonding and casting spells for fun rather than for unleashing their pent up rage. I appreciate that they were able to use their powers for personal gain, but I also really just enjoyed the coming-of-age, fantastical friendship the girls had before all of the friction began in their lives.
It's also helpful that the characters have an impeccable fashion sense and the soundtrack includes the most perfectly selected songs for the vibe of the film.
