Pulse
More then just the scariest movie
My god. I watched this at 2 a.m. while I was home alone, which means two things. One that I was scared to death and two that my brain stopped registering what was happening at the end.
For this review I think it’d be best to divide the movie into its first and second half.
First Half
The first 50-something minutes of this movie are the most terrifyingly well made build up I could imagine. There were multiple times where I couldn’t bear to look at the screen because of how scary and tense the moment was.
The atmosphere is also incredibly eerie and uncomfortable. Especially the lighting added to the scariness, but also the slow way everything is done. What I mean by that is that this feels like the creepy and tense buildup to a good Jumpscare, but the Jumpscare never comes. Instead the tension and creepiness just continues building to extends that for me no other movie even comes close to.
Thematically we just have the buildup for the second half. Many topics are introduced but they aren’t fully fleshed out yet.
Second Half
The second half feels like the direct opposite of the first half. The atmosphere stays weird and mysterious, but the scariness is turned down a bit, being replaced by an still uncomfortable but more depressing feeling.
This is done so the movie can convey its main messaging better and it does this incredibly well. The themes of loneliness and depression that were introduced earlier are blown out to be the main focus of the movie and it also works really well.
I already did but the best word to describe this part of the movie with is depressing.
And even tho the focus lies more on the characters and messaging now there still are some pretty solid scares in here.
Overall you can also add that in the entire movie the acting, soundtrack, lighting and everything you could think of is great.
I feel like especially the entire Sound design and the lighting and atmosphere of the movie add the most to it, since they are exceptionally well done.
For me probably my new favorite horror movie.
