Sonny Boy
This is probably the most flawed 5/5 I’ve ever given.
Sonny Boy starts out as an interesting and very much visually pleasing supernatural/mystery show and at first the anime also stays that way. For the first six episodes Sonny boy does an incredible job at building a large cast with multiple interesting and layered characters and also has an intriguing atmosphere that makes you yearn for more.
After the absolutely phenomenal sixth episode the show morphes into something entirely new.
The plot begins to develop in a much more intimate direction, where the emotional world of the characters is pushed more into the foreground and it seems as if a previously already pale red thread is completely lost and the show feels like a jumble of randomly strung together scenarios, before it finds it‘s footing again during the last two episodes.
Not that the show was entirely coherent during the first half, there were many really interesting experiments, narratively and visually, during the entire show, but still there was a noticeable shift somewhere in episode seven.
Still with everything mentioned above, with all the confusion about a multitude of things, with all the seemingly meaningless sequences, with all of the experiments I still somehow managed to not only make out but deeply resonate with what the show is telling you.
Apart from the emotional themes and the ambiguous story-telling Sonny boy also is just an unbelievable good looking anime and the score/soundtrack positively adds to every scene it is used in, especially in the last episode.
Overall Sonny boy is a deeply profound anime that gives your brain and heart a real piece of work and I can not only appreciate that, I can say with certainty that I understood virtually nothing, but I also can say that with certainty I understood all and everything that I needed to.
