Flow
Took my mom to watch this with me today. A nearby AMC had it as a “Fan Favorite” screening, so the cheaper ticket price point was a definite plus.
My mom has always chided me for making “weird” movie choices for when we go out to the cinema, but this time she said nothing about the film being “weird”, allowing Flow to join the ranks of The Fabelmans and Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris. She isn’t like me. She has nothing to say about how the camera moves with the freedom of your usual CG animated film but with a certain consciousness of space being occupied that other CG work does not. She would have nothing to say about the fantastic animal animation that understands animal behavior but still finds a way to simplify it for the sake of a human audience. She has no interest in talking about how the film’s approach to disaster explicitly uses mostly wild animals in its main cast that are from areas of the “global south” that would be most affected by the effects of global warming. She doesn’t want to talk about how character growth happens for each of its animal cast.
She likes the cute animals doing cute things and that’s a win in my book, to be honest. A film that my mom actually likes that I also like is going to be a big win for that film
