Phantom Thread
“Kiss me, my girl, before I’m sick.”
Delicious and indulgent for all the right reasons. Why Vicky Krieps wasn’t nominated for anything is beyond me because her performance is just stunning. Everything about this film is absolutely ravishing and the appetite of it... UGH, I honestly think I loved it the most because it’s really unlike anything PTA has done before, which I attribute to him not having Robert Elswit for cinematography. That being said, it benefits from that because the shots are so beautifully composed and reminiscent of the gothic melodramas — that shot at the New Years party when the balloons drop, I’ve never beheld something so remarkable. It’s a new change of pace for PTA and IMO he needed it because I think if he did another film with the exact style he’s been banking off of since the 90s, it would’ve flopped.
