Wonder Man
I liked this a lot. It’s so fresh coming from marvel, and I feel way more comfy with Destin doing Spider-Man now.
The production design in recent marvel projects has been so glossy. This show has grit. The walls are scuffed. Cars are old and dirty. There’s texture in this show.
It isn’t lit with classic three point. It’s got contrast. Doorman looked fantastic and played with contrast really well. There’s interesting camera placement. The hood mount shot is amazing with his frantic driving and show of acting. The snori cam into the sound stage explosion was so fantastic and not like any snori cam I’ve seen. It was unhinged and you could feel Simon losing control.
The show was written to be watched. With so much conversation happening about Netflix and how shows are being written to be listened to in the background it’s so nice to have a show that doesn’t spell everything out. By favorite example of that is Trevor pulling an extortion uno reverse with the DODC and cleary’s defeated nod.
My only negatives are Found Footage and the DODC as a whole. Found footage felt like it took one step too far out of bounds and went of the tracks of what made the show so good. I feel like the whole thing was derived just to have Simon in a fight scene. And the DODC, it was just a slog every time we cut to them, I just wanna get back to the drama of the wonder man movie, the auditions and callbacks, the acting exercises, and Hollywood antics.
I also love the finale. The epilogue was fantastic and creative. What creative way to end a show about acting. Moving on to the next thing. Digging into the next role. I know we had to do the superhero bit for the last 5 minutes, but the 20 minutes leading up to that with an entire family of new characters was amazing. Showing Simon’s growth, showing how his personality has become less self aggrandizing and focus more on Trevor’s advice of being a mirror. Asking questions. Being genuinely interested in the world and people around you and getting out of your own head.
I think Trevor’s line in the car on the way to Kovac’s house sums up what this show is about. Everything is gonna work out. He’s been through terrible shit and done terrible shit, but focusing on the stories, the people, the emotion, will always bring out the best in situations. You’ll end up where you need to be if you get out of your own head and face life challenges as the come to you with spontaneity and creativity.
I’m way more excited to Brand New Day now.
