Unbreakable
Making a drama about a man slowly discovering that he is a superhero is genuinely one of the most inspired ideas M. Night has ever had. This is still my personal favorite film that he has ever made. I love the score by James Newton Howard, I love its slow pacing, and especially love the way it tells a quote on quote “superhero story” but without having near constant action or effects to keep the audience engaged. It’s character driven and puts such a strong emphasis on mood and atmosphere rather than spectacle. The only real nitpicks I would have, mainly because I’ve rewatched it so many times, is some narrative issues like David having bad memory regarding his past or some of the shot choices. The unbroken one take shots ;) are really well done but they can come off as a bit showy at times. Other than that I love this film so much and Shyamalan’s films peak with this and The Sixth Sense as far as I am concerned.
