Avengers: Infinity War
The only comparison for this movie’s standing in the mcu hierarchy/ranking is Simone Biles. Biles attempts routines that are so much harder than her opponents that even if she doesn’t perfectly land her finish she still often wins. In gymnastics you lose 1 or 2 point for missing your landing, but Biles attempts moves 3 to 4 points higher in difficulty than her opponents, so a foot out of line and she still wins. That is this movie compared to other MCU. The degree of difficulty to work together these multiple casts who all have their own grooves and rhythms and to finally provide a satisfying payoff for a decade of build up is so much higher difficulty than anything any other marvel movie attempted. Even if you think it isn’t perfect, it still beats other mcu movies for the Simone Biles reasoning.
At its fundamentals it isn’t anything overly unique. A Seinfeld style a through d plot where they intersect at times and a couple come together to finish and everyone faces the outcomes of the same event. But to bring together all those storylines without anyone losing their tone too much and feeling bland is the hard part. New MCU writers/producers/directors should be studying this thing
An underrated space movie? Multiple planets, each unique and interesting. Great ship scenes, the pods that bring down the invading army is cool af
Movie pairings: Other MCU, Interstellar, Dune, Justice League (only to compare how both IPs ended their runs, this movie sucks)
