Memento
Memento is one of those rare films that never fully lets you settle—just when you think you’ve figured it out, it pulls the rug out from under you again. On a rewatch, though, I finally feel like I reached a strong conclusion about the story. It’s the kind of film where understanding deepens over time, and I think I’ve got a better grasp on it now than most.
The meaning here is fascinating—would you still choose vengeance if you knew you’d never remember achieving it?
Once again, I have to give Christopher Nolan a ton of credit here. On paper, a film structured like this shouldn’t work—but he constructs it in a way that not only works, it thrives. A big part of that is the interpretive nature of it. There is a correct answer buried in there, but getting to it takes patience and multiple viewings.
This is a landmark film in the mystery genre. The way information is revealed is incredibly unique, and that final sequence is one of the most fascinating in film history.
Banger film.
