I think the whole dystopian trope is extremely tired in the big 25 but I think this movie does it in a creative and fun way. Even though the movie is silly at times, it does a good job reminding the audience that the probles are real and effecting people. The scenes where Buttle was arrested and Mrs Buttle breaks down are so well acted. It reminds you that Lowry is a person of immense privilege. The director does a good job handling these tonal shifts.
I also love the set design and the art direction here, the fact they did all of this practically is so crazy to me. It has a retro-futuristic vibe to a lot of the upper class houses, but when we get to government buildings they're futuristic but in a sleek and scary way. But I also love how the dreams look too. It feels realistic in a dream way, you know? Ugh I just love it.
I really liked the ending a lot, too. It brings into question, what actually happened and what was a dream? My theory is that everything after the explosion in the lingerie store was a dream. It doesn't make sense for Jill to magically be into him after this. Also, I don't think there are any actual terrorists, I think the government is planting the bombs as well. Mostly because of Jill's comment "have you met any actual terrorists?". Also Tuttle was literally just a dude who fixed heating systems, I assume a lot of the "terrorists" are just regular people like that.
Because of the ending, it went from a cliche dystopian movie to a not cliche dystopian movie. Huge fan of this personally. Might check out this director's other work as well.
