Sinners
"No doubt about it. Last time I seen my brother. Last time I seen the sun. And just for a few hours, we was free."
There's always that moment throughout the year that rekindles my love for cinema after a number of slumps. This is the definition. From top to bottom, this film is just perfect in every shape and form. What Coogler is able to accomplish with just a simple aspect ratio gives me hope for what I one day hope to do. His blend of genres in his writing as well is just genius. It's beyond me how someone can mix together a thriller, romance, and musical-esc film. Oh yeah, the music is also outrageously good as well.
Ludwig Göransson, along with the other songwriters, makes some of the best original soundtracks of the decade so far. The blend of traditional blues and folk with the later addition of heavy-metal inspirations is just phenomenal, and both left me pumped and left tears in my eyes.
The performances all around are also fantastic as well. Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers seems gimmicky and seems impossible to do right, but he bounces off of himself so well that you forget he's one person. Smoke and Stack have such an amazing relationship, and it reminds me of my own experience with my twin brother. Miles Caton is most definitely the standout star as he's subverted as the main lead. He has so much talent and charm that it's hard not to feel his pain and fear, especially at the end. Oluwunmi Mosaku, as well, gives one of the best supporting performances of the year and should most certainly be in contention for Oscar Season.
It's getting late as hell right now, but all I can say is Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps will never outmatch this. This will remain at Number 1.
