Get Out
Ohhh man. Actually gets better every time. Genuinely rivals Spider-Man (2002) for my favorite movie of all time, which, if you know me, that is saying quite a lot. Spider-Man wins out for nostalgia, but Get Out definitely has nostalgic roots as well.
Get Out was probably the first movie I was really excited to watch in theaters and it delivered so well. I knew it was scary and I didn’t even know if I wanted to see it or not, but after watching it, I switched to pretty much watching only horror for like 3 years.
Such a visceral experience on the first viewing that I can’t help but think back to my theater experience whenever any of the really memorable moments pop up. A list of moments in this movie I can only imagine are greater cinematic achievement than the “No, I am your father” reveal (because I hate Star Wars despite having only seen 4 and 7):
- Chris pulling the cotton out of his ears (such an amazing reveal that didn’t take long to set up, fits so well thematically, and honestly is just sick. I realize it doesn’t actually make sense for him to do this, but it makes for such a good Movie Moment)
- When the mom and Chris have that awkward moment when they see each other and both look at the tea cup
After Chris has finally escaped, a cop car sees this black man strangling a white woman
- The reveal that it’s Rod in what we think is the cop car
- Chris stabbing father Armitage with the deer antlers (again just brilliant thematically)
- The first time Chris goes to the sunken place
- The auction scene when Chris’ picture slowly comes into frameTruly a movie that I appreciate the quality of more and gets better every time I watch it. Also a movie that despite getting better every watch, id give away everything i have to watch it for the first time again. I’ve seen a good amount of horror and I can’t think of a horror movie with a better script, a smarter main character, or more well done and well timed comedic relief. So refreshing to come back a movie with a main character who tries to get away when he realizes something is wrong, uses weapons in regular things around him effectively, and even notices patterns in people against which he is having a scrum and uses that again them (when he realizes Jeremy will reach out his leg to kick the door closed when he opens it and stabs him).
Truly an all timer, and from probably the most unexpected source. Always looking forward to the next Peele release. I don’t think Us or Nope reach the heights of Get Out but they’re all really solid. Please another movie Mr. Peele🙏😩
